Didi Ride-Hailing Guide
How to register, book a ride, and communicate with your driver — all without speaking Chinese.
Street-hailing a taxi works, but Didi tells you the price upfront, tracks the car on a map, and means you never have to explain where you are going. It is the smarter way to move.
Why Didi
Didi Chuxing is China's dominant ride-hailing platform — think Uber but with more options. You can book a standard taxi, a private car, a six-seater, or even a carpool. Download the international version DiDi Rider for English UI and direct foreign card payment, or use the Chinese app via WeChat Pay or Alipay.
✅ Why use Didi
- Price shown before you confirm — no negotiation
- Driver sees your location via GPS — no language barrier
- Link to WeChat Pay / Alipay — or pay directly with foreign cards via DiDi Rider
- English UI available (full English in DiDi Rider app)
- Ride types from budget to premium
⚠️ Considerations
- Registration needs international SMS verification
- Some features only in Chinese
- Surge pricing during rain / peak hours
- Driver may call you — use the in-app text translate
How to register
Didi has improved international sign-up significantly. A foreign phone number works.
📱 Step-by-step
- Download Didi from the App Store or Google Play. For foreign visitors, look for "DiDi Rider" — the international version with full English UI and foreign card payment. The orange-and-white Chinese Didi app also works.
- Open the app and tap "Sign Up". Enter your international phone number (including country code).
- You will receive an SMS with a verification code. Enter it to proceed.
- Set your nickname — this is what drivers see. Use your first name or initials.
- Add a payment method: In DiDi Rider, link your Visa or Mastercard directly. In the Chinese Didi app, link WeChat Pay or Alipay (see payment guide).
- Set your pick-up location using the map. Didi uses GPS — no need to type an address for pick-up.
- Choose a ride type and confirm. The driver arrives in 3–10 minutes.
Address & navigation tips
The trick that makes everything easier.
📍 The pin-drop method
For the destination, drop a pin on the map rather than typing an address. Zoom in to the exact building entrance or landmark. This tells the driver exactly where you need to go without either of you saying a word.
- ✓ Use Amap (高德地图) to search for a place, then tap "Share" → "Didi" to send the location directly.
- ✓ Save key locations in advance: your hotel, the airport, train station, and the office.
- ✓ For landmarks, search in Chinese Pinyin if English returns nothing (e.g. "waitan" for The Bund).
- ✓ If meeting a friend, use the "Share my location" feature in WeChat, then open the link in Didi.
📞 When the driver calls
The driver may call to confirm your location. This is normal. A few strategies:
- ✓ Answer the call, say "Qing kan dingwei" (请看定位 — please check the GPS pin). Most drivers will understand.
- ✓ Use the in-app auto-translate chat — type in English and it sends in Chinese.
- ✓ If all else fails, hand the phone to a hotel concierge or a nearby shopkeeper.
- ✓ Reminder: Never cancel a ride after the driver has arrived — you will be charged a cancellation fee.

Airport & long-distance
✈️ Airport transfers
Didi is excellent for airport pick-ups. Your flight is tracked automatically — the driver knows your arrival time. Dedicated Didi pick-up zones are clearly signed at all major airports (look for "网约车上客点").
For premium airport transfers, consider booking via Trip.com (携程) — they offer fixed-price airport cars with English-speaking drivers, often cheaper than Didi Luxury.
🚄 Other ride-hailing options
- ✓ CAOCAO (曹操出行) — New energy vehicle fleet, similar pricing to Didi Express. Available in most major cities.
- ✓ T3 (T3出行) — State-backed competitor, often slightly cheaper. Growing fast.
- ✓ Amap Taxi — Integrated into Amap navigation app. Compares prices across all ride-hailing platforms simultaneously.

Complaints, refunds & safety
What to do when things go wrong.
🔑 Lost items
If you leave something in a Didi, open the ride record → tap “Lost Item” (物品遗失) → call the driver through the app. Didi's system connects you without revealing your actual phone number. Drivers are generally cooperative — lost phones are returned about 70% of the time.
💰 Fare disputes
If the actual fare is significantly higher than the estimate: tap the ride → “Need help” → “Fare issue”. Didi reviews automatically and refunds the difference within 24 hours. Take a screenshot of the estimate before confirming if the price looks high.
🛡️ Safety features
- ✓ Emergency button: An SOS button (一键报警) on the ride screen connects you to local police with your live location.
- ✓ Share your ride: Send a real-time tracking link to a friend via WeChat.
- ✓ Trip recording: Didi can record audio during your ride (anonymised, encrypted, deleted after 7 days).
- ✓ Driver identity: Every driver is registered with real-name verification and face recognition at login.
Surcharges & special cases
When the price changes and what to expect.
⏰ Peak & weather surcharges
- • Morning peak: 7:00–9:00, +20–40%
- • Evening peak: 17:00–19:00, +30–50%
- • Rain / snow: +20–100% depending on severity
- • Late night: 23:00–05:00, ¥5–15 flat surcharge on top of normal fare
- • Holiday eve (Spring Festival, National Day): 1.5–3× surge
🧳 Special scenarios
- • Airport pick-up: Driver waits up to 60 minutes free of charge after your flight lands. After that, waiting fees apply (~¥5 per 10 min). If you are delayed at baggage claim, message the driver through the app.
- • Toll roads: Tolls (高速费) are added to your fare automatically. You will see a separate line on the receipt.
- • Child seat: Didi does not offer child seats by default. For children, book a regular ride and hold the child on your lap (common practice locally). Six-seater rides are roomier for families.
- • Pets: Small pets in carriers are generally accepted without issues. For large dogs, message the driver after booking to confirm.
