๐Ÿ’ก Short answer: Both work for foreigners with a passport and a foreign Visa/Mastercard. Set up one of them before you arrive if possible.

๐Ÿ’š WeChat Pay Setup

WeChat Pay is integrated into the WeChat app. If you already use WeChat to chat, you're half way there.

1

Update or Install WeChat

Make sure you have the latest version of WeChat. Get it from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android). Do NOT use Weixin โ€” use the international "WeChat" version.

2

Add Your Bank Card

Go to Me > Services > WeChat Pay > Wallet > Cards. Tap "Add a Card" and enter:

  • Your passport number (as it appears on your passport)
  • Your full name (exactly as on your passport)
  • Your international card number (Visa, Mastercard, JCB)
  • Card expiry date and CVV
3

Verify Your Identity

You'll be asked to take a photo of your passport. Make sure it's well-lit and all four corners are visible. Processing takes 1โ€“5 minutes.

4

Start Paying

Once verified, you can pay by scanning QR codes or showing your payment code. Most merchants in China accept WeChat Pay โ€” from street vendors to 5-star hotels.

โš ๏ธ Set up before you travel if possible. Passport verification sometimes gets stuck on Chinese mobile networks. It works much better on your home WiFi.
โ„น๏ธ Foreign card limit: Single transaction up to ยฅ6,000. Daily limit ยฅ10,000. Annual limit approximately ยฅ200,000 (about US$28,000). These are set by the card networks, not WeChat.

๐Ÿงพ What You'll Need

  • โœ“ Your valid passport (not a copy)
  • โœ“ A Visa, Mastercard, or JCB credit/debit card in your name
  • โœ“ A smartphone with camera for verification
  • โœ“ The latest WeChat app (international version)
  • ~ A Chinese phone number (helps but not required)
๐Ÿ’ก No Chinese number? You can register WeChat with your international number. Some payment features work better with a Chinese SIM, but isn't mandatory.

๐Ÿ’™ Alipay Setup (Tour Pass or Direct Card)

Alipay has a "Tour Pass" option specifically for short-term visitors, plus a standard foreign card option. Both work well.

1

Download Alipay

Get "Alipay" from the App Store or Google Play. The app automatically shows an English interface for international users. Chinese users see the "Alipay" (ๆ”ฏไป˜ๅฎ) version โ€” same app, different language.

2

Register / Log In

Use your email or phone number to register. Alipay accepts international phone numbers. You'll receive a verification code via SMS.

3

Add Your International Card

Go to Me > Settings > Payment Settings > Add Card. Enter:

  • Card number (Visa, Mastercard, or JCB)
  • Expiry date & CVV
  • Your full name as on the card

Alipay will charge a small temporary amount (refunded) to verify the card.

4

Passport Verification (ยฅ200 Tour Pass)

For larger transactions, Alipay offers the Tour Pass: pre-load up to ยฅ10,000 (about US$1,400) from your foreign card. Go to Home > Search "Tour Pass" and follow the instructions. Requires passport photo.

Alternatively, you can do full identity verification by uploading your passport in Me > Account > Identity Verification.

โš ๏ธ Tip: The Tour Pass is great for short trips (under 90 days). For longer stays, do the full passport verification โ€” it removes the top-up limit and lets you use Alipay more freely.
โ„น๏ธ Foreign card fees: 3% transaction fee for international cards via Tour Pass. Standard foreign card linking (full verification): approximately ยฅ50 (US$7) per transaction over ยฅ200. This is much cheaper than carrying cash.

๐Ÿงพ What You'll Need

  • โœ“ Your valid passport
  • โœ“ A Visa, Mastercard, or JCB card
  • โœ“ Smartphone with camera
  • โœ“ Alipay app (latest version)
  • ~ Chinese phone number (optional for Tour Pass)

โ“ Common Questions

Which is better for foreigners โ€” WeChat Pay or Alipay?
Both work well. WeChat Pay is better if you already use WeChat for messaging โ€” it's one less app. Alipay has a dedicated "Tour Pass" feature for short-term visitors that is slightly easier to set up. Most travellers set up both and use whichever a merchant accepts (which is nearly everywhere for both).
Can I use my foreign credit card directly?
Yes, both WeChat Pay and Alipay support Visa, Mastercard and JCB issued outside of China. American Express, Discover and Diners Club are more limited. The card must be in your name and match your passport.
What about cash? Do I still need it?
Yes โ€” always carry some cash (ยฅ500โ€“1000). Small street vendors, some taxi drivers, and rural businesses may not accept digital payments. ATMs are widely available and accept foreign cards (look for Bank of China, ICBC, or China Merchants Bank ATMs).
Will my bank charge foreign transaction fees?
That depends on your bank. Many international cards (Revolut, Wise, Monzo, Charles Schwab) have no foreign transaction fees. Check with your bank before travelling. WeChat Pay and Alipay themselves may add a 2โ€“3% fee for international card transactions.
What if my passport verification fails?
Common issues: (1) The photo is blurry or not well-lit โ€” retake it in daylight. (2) Your name doesn't match exactly between passport and card โ€” check for middle names, hyphens, etc. (3) The network is slow โ€” try on WiFi instead of mobile data. If it still fails, visit a WeChat/Alipay service counter at any major airport in China, or contact customer support within the app.
Can I use these apps before arriving in China?
Yes โ€” strongly recommended. Both apps let you complete registration and card binding outside of China. Passport verification sometimes works better on your home network. Once you land, everything is ready to use.
Is it safe to link my foreign card?
Yes. Both WeChat Pay and Alipay are PCI DSS compliant and use tokenisation โ€” your actual card number is never shared with merchants. They process billions of transactions daily. Standard fraud protection from your card issuer still applies.
